Finding a great dentist can be difficult, especially if you aren’t a fan. Whether you had a bad experience as a child, fear a loss of control, or just can’t stand the sound of the drill, dental fear is real and affects billions of people all over the world. Thankfully, Timberview Family Dentistry helps alleviate those fears with sedation dentistry.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is used for patients who fear the dentist. From mild anxiety to full blow dental phobia, sedation dentistry helps people relax.

Dr. Julie Storm and her team of dentists in Midwest City provide two types of dental relaxation for patients who suffer from dental anxiety.

Oral Sedation

Not used for pain relief, oral sedatives are taken on the day of your appointment or the night before. You will be awake during the procedure, but relaxed and comfortable, as you will be numbed with a mild sedative before your dental treatment. Because you will be mildly sedated, you won’t be aware of any part of the procedure.

Laughing Gas/Nitrous Oxide

Inhaled through a tube and mask, nitrous oxide, or laughing gas is used with a local anesthetic to eliminate and numb the pain. This is the only type of sedation that allows you to drive yourself home after your dental appointment as Dr. Storm and her team can control the amount of gas emitted during your procedure.

Why are People Afraid of the Dentist?

As previously mentioned, people say they fear the dentist because of a painful experience in the past. Perhaps a less than forgiving dental appointment or a dentist who was less than friendly.

Hearing horror stories from friends and family may have also left an imprint. Fear of shots, a loss of control or cringing at the thought of someone standing over you are all reasons people fear the dentist.

Avoiding the dentist only makes things worse. A small cavity could develop into a huge problem. That root canal may not have been necessary had you seen your dentist in Midwest City earlier.

Sedation dentistry works. Call and schedule an appointment with TImberview Family Dentistry. You’ll be glad you did and so will your teeth and gums.
